BUILT TO SPILL & DINOSAUR JR

Before last night, I had only ever heard of Dinosaur Jr, but not ever heard them. When I walked in to Stubb's, they were already playing, in front of a wall of amps. It took only one song for me to be thoroughly blown away, not just by the sound, but by their talent. There was only one guitarist, and he was also the only singer. For acoustic songs, this is the norm, but he was having a jam session on the electric while still managing to sing. Most impressive.

Then it was time for the band I came to see, BUILT TO SPILL! What's crazy is that they really looked up to Dinosaur Jr when they were younger and just getting started, and now they're Built to Spill's opening band! It was one of the most amazing concerts I've ever been to. They even came back to play an encore! It was just perfect.

Here's a video from one of their concerts earlier this year, playing a song called "Else."

Weekend Box Office Review

Where the Wild Things Are opened at number one this past weekend, taking in over $32 million, a modest amount for such a peculiar children’s film. It relied heavily on the popularity of the book, which has been a success for multiple generations, as well as an eye-catching visual style that translated the book’s images into a full-form live-action world. With themes of alienation and hints to a dysfunctional family, it didn’t necessarily draw as much of the family crowd as your typical family pic, and it also lacked the 3D-CG-ADD-infused animation that kids are used to these days. The second highest-grossing film was Law Abiding Citizen, with $20.2 million. This one relied heavily on its two stars, Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler (who seems to be in everything this year), as well as it’s fleshed out over-the-top action plot, and drew in the usual amount for a film that caters to that audience. Paranormal Activity finished out the top three, making just over $20 million, for a total of nearly $34 million. For a film that costs a reported $15,000, it is an enormous success, much in the vane of last decade’s The Blair Witch Project. It opened to 760 theaters this weekend, and it’s on schedule to open to hundreds more next weekend in an effort to combat the yearly Saw-Halloween audience. The other new film to open this weekend was The Stepfather, which is yet another remake of a B-horror film. It made just over $12 million, which for a budget of $20 million, isn’t too bad of a performance. It will probably make its money back and will be a mere blip on anyone’s radar within the next couple weekends, as it should be.

Where The Wild Things Are!!!!

If there is one movie you see this weekend, make it Where the Wild Things Are. Spike Jonze’s take on Maurice Sendak’s classic children’s book is a beautiful journey of childlike wonder and imagination. For those that haven’t read the book, it tells the story of young Max who has a bad day and runs away from home. While he is away, he sails to a remote island that is inhabited by, well, wild things. He tells them that he is a king with special powers, taking charge of their land with promises of constant fun and eliminating sadness. The book is only nine sentences long, and its images have been translated into a feature-length, live-action film, which is a bold move by its creators for not going with the safety of the typical CG-family film. The wild things are brought to us by those Jim Henson puppeteer masters, with faces that were computer-generated later. The result is characters—not creatures—that look and feel real to the audience, as well as to the actor that played Max, which is important in highlighting their massive size and the potential danger to him. That’s not the only reason it isn’t your usual kid’s flick. The movie doesn’t pander to its audience; it assumes that the kids watching it are able to comprehend and relate to its situations, even when they are wrapped in darker undertones, and I believe that they can. Everything that happens in the movie is told from Max’s perspective, a child’s perspective, and it does so in the most authentic and visceral way. No other movie has made me remember and revert back to my own childlike mentality—when the little things meant everything, or when you’re just so angry about something that is ultimately insignificant but you just can’t express its importance to someone that doesn’t understand, like an adult. And for the movie to hold this power makes it not only a wonderful film for children, but a gem for adults as well.

Word of Mouth.

Adding to Miley Cyrus' long list of home-made videos, she has now made a rap video about her decision to leave Twitter.com

Oprah Winfrey getting sued? Yes, it's true! A flight attendant filed suit against Winfrey because she was fired from her job after she was accused of having "inappropriate intimate behavior" with a pilot during a flight while Winfrey was elsewhere in the cabin. The Pilot was fired as well.

Megan Fox has talked to much smack about the director of Transformers. Due to her smack talking, the director is planning to kill her in Transformers 3.

Best Friends are family! Yes, that's right. Ben Afflect and Matt Damon, according to New England Genealogical Society, says that the two are 10th cousins!

And to wrap up this gossip- Kate Gosselin has filed for child AND spousal support. She has filed this after John took $230,000 out of the bank account. She wants the judge to order that John return the money.

Still Undefeated!

With Oklahoma in the sights for the Longhorns, the Colorado Buffaloes came into town to derail the #2 ranked Longhorns. The first half was a scare for the Longhorns as nothing seemed to be going there way. Fumbles and bad defensive play seemed to be the main problem. Colorado quarterback, Cody Hawkins burned Texas twice on 2 play-action passes for touchdowns leaving the score 14 Colorado-10 Texas at halftime. However, the Longhorns always know how to step it up when they need to. In the second half, special teams and defensive began to step up. Ben Wells blocks a punt and returns it for a three yard touchdown and Jordan Shipley comes through with a 74 yard punt return. One of the biggest plays of the night comes from Earl Thomas with his 92 yard interception return, tying the second longest in Texas history. After the big second half, the Longhorns come through with the victory, with the final score being 38-14.

Opening This Week.... 10/9

There’s lots to see at the theater this weekend with four--count ‘em 4!—new wide releases, each with something completely different to offer. First up, there’s the Drew Barrymore directorial debut Whip It, starring Juno’s Ellen Page, a flower power female empowerment film all the way. Page plays an outcast girl that finds her tribe with roller derby girls, with Kristen Wiig, Juliette Lewis, and Marcia Gay Harden co-starring, as well as Barrymore herself. Next, there is the new Ricky Gervais comedy The Invention of Lying, in which he stars, co-produces, co-writes, and co-directs. It tells the story of a man that tells the first lie in a world where everyone tells the truth, which would sound like a promising premise for some laughs, if it didn’t turn sappy with the Jennifer Garner love interest. However, Jonah Hill, Louis C.K., and Tina Fey co-star to add some flavor to the comedy brew. The more serious release this weekend is Michael Moore’s new doc, Capitalism: A Love Story, which has Moore up to his usual doc antics while trying to expose his take on the current economic system. It’s an obviously topical film that will more than likely draw the usual Moore crowd, which is quite substantial, but it’s box office performance will no doubt go nowhere near the heights of his biggest success, Fahrenheit 9/11. The last wide release is Zombieland, yet another attempt at the often-failed sub-genre of horror-comedy, more specifically zombie horror-comedy a la Shaun of the Dead. But the movie has a promising cast—Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg (Adventureland), Emma Stone (Superbad), and Academy-Award nominee Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine), which gives it potential to stand above the many failed attempts. After the quiet weekend last week, with the releases of Fame (the remake) and Bruce Willis’s Surrogates, both went relatively unseen by audiences, this weekend sure has a lot more to offer.

Movie Reviews

I have to eat my words—Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was much more delectable than your average plate of spaghetti and meatballs. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I laughed throughout the entire film, striking a perfect blend between slapstick and referential, or kiddie and adult, humor. I was put off by the over-explanatory title, which seemed to set up a premise I had no interest in seeing—raining food? Really? —But it worked, it all worked. The unique animation, the vocal performances, the comedy, the moral lessons all amounted to one of the more enjoyable family films I have seen this year (not as good as Up, typical of those Pixar geniuses). But one thing about Cloudy, I did not get the chance to see it in 3D, but I can imagine that, with all the food that comes towards the screen, it’d be even…tastier. Zombieland was another one that left me pleasantly surprised. With the cast, I knew there was potential for it to be a fun time at the movies, but my doubts overshadowed that potential because of how often comedy and horror fail to mesh—I was wrong. The movie works because it never lets up; it stays consistent with its over-the-top violence/gore and comedic bits that’ll have you laugh until you scream. The amount characters stays limited and the movie shies away from too much sentimentality between them, leaving the audience free to revel in the videogame-like fun of this post-zombielyptic land. Also, it has to be mentioned, there is a cameo from a well-known actor that kills, coming in at just the right time to kick the humor back into gear. So there it is—proof that you can never be too sure what to expect from a movie, no matter how formulaic or tired it may seem, because Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Zombieland are far from being either.
