Longhorn Style Football!

After a great win against Tech last week, there could be a possibility for the Longhorns to possibly look pass the UTEP Miners. However, there was no way that Mack Brown and & Colt McCoy were going to let that happen and showed up to DRK stadium ready to play some good ol' Texas football. The game started off close for only a couple minutes as the scoreboard showed 7-7 in the first quarter. But things changed quickly as Freshman D.J Monroe ran a 91 yard kickoff return and made it 14-7. Monroe was the first Longhorn to run back to kickoffs for touchdowns in one game. The game was very lopsided as the Longhorns outscore the Miners 47 to 7 in the first half and 17 to in the second half. The only score from the Miners came off a interception touchdown return from Melvin Stephenson II. The Longhorns come off a great win and prepare for a nice bye week until they have the Colorado Buffaloes come into town. Hookem Horns!

Monsters of Folk

Allow me to introduce you to my new favorite band:
MONSTERS OF FOLK
(picture taken from http://popsecret.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/monstersoffolk.jpg)

Monsters of Folk is comprised of Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis from Bright Eyes, Jim James from My Morning Jacket, and Matt Ward of M. Ward. With four such amazingly talented people coming together for one album, my expectations were so high that I was a little nervous I'd be let down, but there was no reason to worry. This CD is nothing less than greatness and I haven't been able to listen to anything else since.

You can listen to every song on their new album that was just released yesterday from their myspace: http://www.myspace.com/monstersoffolk

Another Celebrity Baby....

The precious couple, Freddie Prinze, Jr. and (with a newly changed last name) Sarah Michelle Prinze, just welcomed a baby girl into the world! The precious bundle of joy was born on Sept. 19 and given the name Charlotte Grace Prinze which, personally, I think is a seriously beautiful name. Although Prinze, Jr. has stayed out of the public eye for the last few years he will star on the upcoming season of 24. A rep for the couple says, "the family is over the moon." So excited to see the precious baby in some pics!!

Still On Top!

Who's number 2 in college football? The Texas Longhorns are! After the long awaited rematch between the Texas Longhorns and the Texas Tech Red Raiders hits 0.00 on the scoreboard we finally have revenge! With the game close for most of the first half, we saw the scoreboard get lit up by Colt McCoy and Taylor Potts. With Texas Tech being behind for most the game Potts could only play catch up by throwing for a whopping 46/62for 420 yards, 3 touchdowns and 1 interception. But stats do not mean a win in the records books. Colt McCoy's 4th quarter touchdown pass to Dan Buckner was the dagger in the hearts of all Raiders fans. McCoy passed for 24/34 for 205 yards, 1 touchdown, and 2 interceptions. After that 4th quarter touchdown, there was no answer for the Red Raiders as the Longhorns defense stopped them from any last minute miracles and making the final score 34-24. On top of the two talented quarterbacks, Jordan Shipley made several highlight reels. With his punt return for a touchdown and 11 reception day. Revenge is sweet and the longhorns are tasting a big bowl of it!

Opening This Week....

Opening this week, the Sony Pictures Animation film Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, the latest film to capitalize on the 3D family film trend that has been swarming theaters this year. It has its fair share of noteworthy comedians filling in voices, like Bill Hader and Andy Samburg, and not to mention, quite the unique plot, which is just as the title suggests—raining meatballs. But the film probably won’t be more substantial than your average plate of spaghetti and meatballs—safe, satisfying, but nothing new. Also new this, Love Happens, starring Jennifer Aniston and Aaron Eckhart, which, from the trailer, looks like a systematically produced rom-com—famous actor and famous actress fall in love despite preventative obstacles. Blah. Jennifer’s Body, starring Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried (coming off her Mamma Mia! fame), is another possessed girl turns killer movie, but with a bitey, satirical script, much like a line of other horror film that invite comedy to spice things up. However, this one was penned by the Academy Award-winning writer of Juno, Diablo Cody, so it’s a bit more promising than your average, weekly-released horror (like last weeks’ Sorority Row). The best film opening this week is The Informant!, reuniting Matt Damon with the Ocean’s-series director Steven Soderbergh, telling the true story of a man that attempts to take down an giant agricultural corporation. Matt Damon is sure to give an acclaimed performance, and Soderbergh is always a director to take interest in.

Movie Reviews

Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself opened at number one this past weekend at no surprise, banking just over $23 million, making it the third highest grossing Perry movie ever. Tyler Perry has become a brand of unstoppable force. It would be disappointing had his film not opened to number one, but that said, not much is every to be expected from a Tyler Perry movie. They recycle the same material repeatedly to attract the same audience that makes it to the theaters on opening weekend, and they fizzle out quickly in the weeks to come. 9, a new animated film from newcomer Shane Acker and based on his acclaimed short film, opened to a moderate $10 million, considering the lack of effective publicity, which stepped away from promoting the big-name voices and focused more on visuals. Inglourious Basterds followed up the top 3 with just over $6 million, making it on track to becoming the highest grossing Tarantino film ever, with a total of nearly $104 million, on the coattails of Pulp Fiction’s $107 million. Other new releases included Sorority Row and Whiteout, which both opened to just about $5 million. Sorority Row attempted to capitalize on the success of The Final Destination and keep the horror, date-night audience coming, but it failed because of its regurgitated slasher premise and inexistent franchise to help back it up. Whiteout only had one thing going for it—Kate Beckinsale. The promotions for the film were schizophrenic, leaving the open-ended to being either a thriller of sorts or a monster horror film. The unique location of Antarctica was also heavily prevalent in the advertising, but viewers have yet to consider Beckinsale a leading lady, and they didn’t by into the ambiguous plot—bravo.

What Happens When Heath Ledger Meets Isaac Brock?

When Modest Mouse released their new music video for the song "King Rat," I was surprised to see Heath Ledger listed as the director, but more than that I was blown away by the intense and chilling imagery on my screen, not something you normally get with cartoons.

According to Rolling Stone's Daniel Kreps, "Ledger approached Modest Mouse’s Issac Brock with the storyline for the video when Brock visited Australia in January 2007... With the clip, Ledger was hoping to bring awareness to the illegal commercial whale hunts taking place off the shores of Australia by reversing the roles of the parties involved, and the imagery of the video does a superior job of translating Ledger’s message."

Without further ado, I present "King Rat":
Modest Mouse - King Rat (Directed by Heath Ledger)

Revenge of the Longhorns!

Every single person who bleeds burnt orange will always hate Texas Tech for crushing any type of national title hopes the longhorns had last year. However, things will definitely be different between the two teams. With Crabtree and Harrell gone, Colt McCoy and company look to destroy the past and add another W to the record books. The last play of the 4th quarter will always be in the heads of several UT students, but the longhorns will do whatever it takes to avenge the last minute defeat against the Raiders Saturday Night in Austin. Update of this game to come soon

VMA's Recap

Incase you missed the wild show from last night, here is a recap:

While giving her speech for winning, Best Female Video , Kanye West grabbed the microphone form Taylor Swift and said "I'm really happy for you. I'll let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time." Photobucket

Poor Taylor. Although the crowed supported her, and even Beyoncé saved the night when she won her award but called Taylor Swift back on stage to finish her speech. Photobucket

Although, I still agree with Pink when she tweeted, "Kanye West is the biggest piece of sh*t on earth, quote me."

Lady Gaga have an awesome performance singing, "Paparazzi" and the much anticipated New Moon Extended trailer was released as well. Photobucket

And incase you want to see it again, because I know I do, here is the clip of the New Moon Trailer.

A Mouth Full of Gossip.

Bye Bye Paula Abdul and hello Ellen DeGeneres. Fox announced her as the new replacement for Abdul on American Idol.

After spiking to the number one search term, the rumor that Matt Damon has died is proven to be false. It was rumored that he went on a gold rush and was found dead near Mexico after he ran out of water. However, he is alive and kicking.

Jay-Z came clean about his drug dealing past. (Is this news to anyone?) In his interview with Oprah, he spoke of his drug dealing days as "natural." Was the drive by shootings he survived "natural" as well?

Miley Cyrus told of her dreams that her show Hannah Montana from the Disney Channel would be more like that of Sex and the City from HBO. Although her dreams about her show may never come true, she was offered a guest role on the upcoming Sex and The City Part 2.

And finally, Jennifer Aniston has announced that she will be taking a break from acting and is going to "go on an adventure and take herself somewhere." She stated that she won't be returning to work until at least January.

That's all the gossip for now.

ACL Lineup Changes

Most of us have already heard the heartbreaking news that the Beastie Boys have had to cancel their ACL appearance after Adam “MCA” Yauch was diagnosed with cancer. Lilly Allen was also reported to have dropped around the same time. Now we face a new disappointment: the loss of Sonic Youth.

Joe Gross from Austin360.com writes, "Sonic Youth is canceling its upcoming tour dates because guitarist Lee Ranaldo fractured his wrist. Also, Marva Wright, “The Blues Queen of New Orleans,” recently suffered a stroke and will not play her set. Dirty Projectors and Mike Posner will now both take the stage Sunday in Zilker Park" (http://www.austin360.com/blogs/content/shared-gen/blogs/austin/music/entries/2009/09/09/acl_lineup_changes_now_officia.html).

Fortunately, one of my favorite bands, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, have agreed to play in the Beastie Boys' Friday night slot. Unfortunately for me, this means they're playing at the same time as Kings of Leon. Life is just full of difficult decisions...
